Vijay Amritraj (born 14 December 1953) is an Indian sports commentator, actor and retired professional tennis player from Madras. He was awarded the Padma Shri, the government of India's 4th highest civilian honour, in 1983. In 2022, he was honored for his contributions to tennis in London by the International Tennis Hall of Fame and International Tennis Federation. On July 20, 2024 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.Vijay Amritraj is a retired Indian tennis player who achieved international fame during the 1970s and 1980s. Born in Chennai, India, he rose to prominence as one of the best tennis players in Asia, holding the top spot for 14 consecutive years.

Vijay was born in Madras, India to Maggie Dhairyam and Robert Amritraj. He has two brothers, Anand Amritraj and Ashok Amritraj, who were also international tennis players.

Grand Slam Success: He reached the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments – Wimbledon, the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open.

Top-Ranked Player: He achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 16 in the world.

Born on December 14, 1953, in Madras (now Chennai), India, Vijay Amritraj came from a family of tennis players. His father, K. S. Amritraj, was a former Davis Cup player, and his brothers, Anand and Ashok, were also professional tennis players. Vijay started playing tennis at a young age and quickly showed his talent. He turned professional in 1973 and soon made a name for himself on the international circuit.

Amritraj's career was highlighted by his impressive performances at Grand Slam tournaments. He reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1973 and 1981, and the quarterfinals of the US Open in 1973. He also won 15 singles titles and 13 doubles titles on the ATP Tour.



One of Amritraj's most memorable victories came against Jimmy Connors at the Cincinnati Masters in 1984. He also defeated other top players such as Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, and Rod Laver during his career.

Davis Cup

Amritraj played a crucial role in India's Davis Cup team. He led India to two Davis Cup finals appearances in 1974 and 1987. Although India lost both finals, Amritraj's contributions to the team were significant.

Post-Retirement

After retiring from professional tennis, Amritraj remained involved in the sport. He has worked as a television commentator for various tennis tournaments and has also served as an administrator for the ATP and WTA events in Chennai. He is currently the president of the Chennai Open, a professional tennis tournament held annually in Chennai.
